Swimming Pools : An Overview of Swimming Pool Filters

One of the most important parts of a swimming pool pump system is the filter. Obviously, the pool pump filter is responsible for the removal of dirt, bugs, leaves and other debris that would otherwise make your pool unusable. That static nature of pools means that the water sits and collects what the wind brings. As time goes on, the water becomes unappealing, or even unhealthy to swim in.

Most users prefer sand filters as they have a record of removing nearly 40 % microns of the debris. Anything less than that is not possible to remove by any filter medium. The sand filter is also called as ‘bullet proof filter’. They can be cleaned weekly, during swimming season. The maintenance work is referred as ‘backwashing’. The clean water flows and the wastewater is dumped.

Three different types of swimming pool pump filters make up the bulk of availability. Cartridge filters, sand filters, and diatomaceous earth, or DE filters.

The DE filters are considered to be the most efficient types of swimming pool filters, as they can stop even the smallest particles from getting in your pool (DE filters are meant to stop debris 3 to 5 micros in size).

The sand filled filter allows for a higher throughput of water than do the diatomaceous earth filters due to the more corse sized sand used. On the other hand, the filtering ability of the sand filled filter is not capable of removing the fine particles that the DE type of filter can.
